Residency at Headlands Center for the Arts

  • Headlands Center for the Arts (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

A most needed refuge from the business of city life. I look forward to make art in my own time, uninterrupted by the obligations of everyday life, and take long meandering hikes along the rolling golden hills and the beautiful Headlands National Park coastline. So lucky to be going to a place I dreamed for years of going.

Solo exhibition at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Centre

Ruinas deals with issues of collective memory, historical trauma, and identity. Utilizing mixed media drawing techniques, Castillo applies various motifs found in pre-Hispanic mythology, Salvadoran popular folklore, Catholic iconography, and references from Western art history to culminate in a hybridized aesthetic of historic, cultural, and personal experiences. Issues of migration, violence, and indigenous knowledge unique to El Salvador's living memory are prominent in his work.

Drawn with great delicacy and a rich, almost romantic palette, Castillo's drawings do not hesitate to collide abrupt and startling images into new hybrids—at once disruptive and disturbing while simultaneously evoking a lush eloquence. Concocted as narratives, his drawings are non-linear in aspect and intuitively construct memory as a mechanism of personal myth-making within which politics and modes of resistance can speak to a process of reconciliation, repair and healing.

Group exhibition El Pasado Adelante

  • Centro Cultural de España en El Salvador (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Group exhibition at The Vancouver Art Gallery

Storytelling—its scope and ongoing significance—lies at the heart of Stories that animate us, a dynamic and compelling exhibition developed formally and thematically in conversation with Sun Xun’s Mythological Time. Highlighting a rich selection of works on paper and animations, Stories that animate us draws from a diverse range of oral histories, narratives, knowledge systems and cosmologies.

Whether evoking the spirit world, delving into the depths of their imagination or endeavouring to make meaning from historical and current events, the featured artists reflect on such existential themes as culture, community, memory, morality and identity in order to speak to the past, present and future. Stories that animate us invites the public to reflect on the importance of storytelling in their lives while asking: What stories inspire you, what stories need to be told and which will you pass on?

Featured artists include Robert Davidson, Francisco de Goya, Jérôme Havre, David Hockney, Cindy Mochizuki, Ed Pien, Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo, Marina Roy, Royal Art Lodge, Cauleen Smith, Amanda Strong, Camille Turner, Howie Tsui and Joyce Wieland.

Organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery and curated by Zoë Chan, Assistant Curator and Diana Freundl, Interim Chief Curator/Associate Director

Ruins is a series of mixed media drawings that describes an ongoing process of reconciliation with tragedy, by recounting individual experience and revising collective memory witihin the legacy and impact of the Salvadoran Civil war.

In these recent works, historical trauma and catastrophe are mediated by reconfiguring notions of re-growth, renewal and healing through personal myth making.  Working from a variety of  historical, cultural and political references, hybrid imagery is merged by revising Pre-hispanic storytelling, cosmology, Salvadoran popular folkore and iconography sourced from Western art history.

Hey- Modern Art and Modern Culture Magazine

A selection of my drawings were handsomely featured in Issue #31 of Hey- Modern Art & Modern Pop Culture Magazine this month in Paris, France. Hey- Modern Art & Pop culture magazine appeals to and trusts imagination to resist the fashions, standards, expectations, categories and institutions, the weight of things and time. Making the imaginary an intimate way to meet a community of beings close beyond geography but similar in their difference.
